Our Story
The Anglesey Rec Academy was the brainchild of a group of friends who grew up loving the beautiful
game and wanted others to experience the passion, camaraderie and joy that sports and football
can offer.
Legendary league clubs like FC Kaleef and Rec FC that once created football poetry at the colosseum
of Burton on Trent; Anglesey Rec, started to become a distant memory and thus the decision was
made to reintroduce football into the area to create a new batch of legends.
In May 2021, plans were set in motion to address a real absence of organised football opportunities
within the Anglesey and Uxbridge area. We initially set up Open Sessions to help increase awareness
of the beautiful game within the local community. These sessions were designed not only to give
children an opportunity to socialise, have fun, and enjoy football, but also to serve as a way of
engaging players who might otherwise have joined teams outside the Anglesey and Uxbridge area.
By offering these open and welcoming sessions, we have been able to strengthen our presence
locally while ensuring that more children have the chance to play football in their own community.
The vision was simple: to bring football back to the community and create a structured pathway for
young players.
In the summer of 2022, the Academy joined the Burton Junior Football League, starting out with just
two teams (U9s and U10s) competing in the league.
Fast forward a few years, and Anglesey Rec Academy has grown into an FA Affiliated Football
Academy, now boasting multiple teams across various age groups — a true testament to the
commitment of our volunteers, players, and the local community.
The growth has been extraordinary and has further underlined the need for this Academy was within the community.
In 2024 our U12 Gladiators won the Second division title in their first ever season, an achievement made even more remarkable by the fact that for many of the players it was their first serious foray into organised football.
With more teams in the pipeline to meet the demand for other age groups, the future looks
promising for the Academy, and we will all become a part of this journey.
